Adds camera_eeprom_test (labels ondevice rvc4eeprom ci noreplayci). It covers the RVC4 CCM EEPROM RPC over /dev/i2c and the shared-bus rule from depthai-device-kb MR !428. It also adds a HIL job that runs the test on the lightroom testbed.

How the test adapts to the device

Nothing about the device is hardcoded.

  • Bus layout: before the cases run, the test opens the device with no pipeline and does a 1-byte CCM EEPROM read per connected camera. When cameras share a bus, the firmware's refusal names the bus and every socket on it, so any port assignment works, including more than two cameras on one bus.
  • EEPROM presence: each camera is streamed alone and its EEPROM read.
  • Skips and failures: a camera may have a CCM EEPROM, a CBA EEPROM, or both. A case whose cameras lack the type it needs skips and says why. A separate case fails when a connected camera has neither type. Write refusals on a shared bus run without an EEPROM, because the firmware refuses before touching the bus.
  • Streaming and power: CCM accesses stream the camera they target, since its module must be powered. CBA reads keep every camera idle. No case streams more than two cameras.

Cases

# Case Expected
Bus layout Each shared bus is refused with (active: none) while idle
Readouts are unique Two full reads per camera, no duplicates or AND-copies across cameras; otherwise nothing writes
Every connected camera has a CCM or CBA EEPROM Fails for a camera with neither
1 Round trip, two cameras on different buses streaming Write 20 random bytes, read back, restore
2 Round trip, each camera streaming alone Same, one camera at a time
3 Idle cameras on a shared bus, another camera on it streaming Refused, (active: <streaming camera>)
4 Reads, two cameras on a shared bus streaming All refused
5 Writes, two cameras on a shared bus streaming All refused
6 Read right after start() OK or "not powered", and the stream comes up
7 Access before start() "Not powered"
CBA EEPROM, no camera streaming Read only (calibration can't be restored byte-exact)

Write-protected module EEPROMs produce a warning, not a failure. Every write is restored, and the logs show only fingerprints of the EEPROM contents.

CI

  • run_tests.py --rvc4eeprom selects the new rvc4eeprom label, so the general rvc4 testbeds no longer run this test.
  • test_child.yml gains a linux_rvc4_eeprom_test job, turned on by enable_eeprom_tests (on for PR and nightly HIL). It runs hil_runner --scope lightroom --models <model> for:
    • oak4_lite_poe: CAM_B/CAM_C share I2C bus 9, and all three cameras have CCM EEPROMs.
    • oak4_ffc: CBA EEPROMs on B/C/D, and a CCM EEPROM on CAM_A.
  • Needs a hil-framework release that bundles hil_config !407, which points lightroom at the OAK4 Lite. 0.1.402 still lists the previous OAK4-D. Until a newer release is out, the mxid sanity check would fail and block the testbed.

Tested

Run locally against the lightroom devices with the commit's test binary and core's RVC4 firmware pin c628eb16, which includes the !428 merge f901c712:

Device OS Result Skipped
OAK4 Lite 2498058097 1.45.0 10 passed, 1 skipped, 56 assertions, ~86 s CBA: none on this device (A, B, C have CCM EEPROMs)
OAK4-FFC 3350245265 1.47.0 7 passed, 4 skipped, 27 assertions, ~56 s 1: only CAM_A has a CCM EEPROM (B, C, D have CBA EEPROMs). 3–5: no shared bus

On the Lite, CAM_B and CAM_C reject writes (write-protected OV9282 modules), and CAM_A's round trips succeed and are restored.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added on-device validation of camera EEPROM access on RVC4, including camera-module reads, write-and-restore checks, and access to cameras sharing an I2C bus.
    • Added checks for consistent reads, access during streaming and startup, and read-only access to camera-board calibration data.
    • Tests skip unsupported platforms and cameras without the relevant EEPROMs.
    • Enabled these tests in pull request and nightly hardware runs, with results included in test reporting.

Covers CCM EEPROM reads and writes through readCcmEepromRaw/writeCcmEepromRaw,
including CAM_B and CAM_C sharing one I2C bus, and CBA EEPROM reads. The test
controls which cameras stream, restores every write and logs only fingerprints
of EEPROM contents.

This PR adds an RVC4 camera EEPROM test that writes to real camera modules on the Lightroom testbed and enables it in PR and nightly CI. If a run is interrupted mid-write, the original EEPROM contents can be lost, because the backup is held only in memory. Several test paths can also pass despite real failures, or can write to modules that have no backup. Resolve or explicitly accept the backup persistence and write-gating issues before merge. The rest are test-coverage improvements.

Do not let a detected CBA EEPROM that cannot be read pass the test.

The socket was already added to detected at Line 770. After that, an EepromError from readCBACalibration2 only calls report(). It adds nothing to problems, and the final skip at Line 796 does not apply because detected is not empty. If the CBA read RPC regresses on every socket, the test still passes. The author's device has no CBA EEPROM, so this path did not run. If a blank or invalid CBA EEPROM is an accepted state, report it with WARN. Otherwise, add the error to problems.

…om_test

Drop the hardcoded CAM_A/B/C sockets. Before the cases run, the test opens
the device without a pipeline and does a 1-byte CCM EEPROM read per
connected camera. Each refusal names the shared bus and its sockets, so the
cases work on any port assignment and with more than two cameras on one bus.

Cases that need a CCM EEPROM skip with the reason when no camera under test
has one. Write refusals on a shared bus still run without an EEPROM, because
the firmware refuses them before touching the bus. CCM cases stream the
cameras whose EEPROMs they access; CBA cases keep the cameras idle.

Move camera_eeprom_test from the rvc4 label to its own rvc4eeprom label and
run_tests.py target. Its cases need a shared camera I2C bus and CCM/CBA
EEPROMs, which the general rvc4 testbeds don't have.

New linux_rvc4_eeprom_test job (enabled for PR and nightly HIL) runs it with
hil_runner --scope lightroom, once per camera model there: oak4_lite_poe
(CAM_B/CAM_C share an I2C bus) and oak4_ffc (CBA EEPROMs).

The bus-layout check cannot detect a shared bus whose sockets all report not powered.

When no camera is active, addToLayout treats a notPowered answer as a socket that is alone on its bus. It records no problem and no bus entry. busLayout reports problems only for sockets that a refusal named. If every socket on a shared bus returns notPowered, layout.problems stays empty, the bus-layout case passes, and requireSharedBus skips the three shared-bus cases. No assertion in that group then fails.

The repository has no independent expectation of which sockets share a bus. A check that compares the discovered layout with such an expectation would detect this case. Adding one needs a topology input that the repository does not provide.

Treat a not-powered read on a streaming camera as an error, not as a missing EEPROM.

readAlone() reports not detected and returns when a streaming camera's first read is not-powered. It records no problem and stores no EEPROM. Any firmware regression that returns this error for an EEPROM-equipped camera therefore drops that camera from the inventory silently.

When every camera is dropped, CCM EEPROM readouts are unique skips at line 772. Cases 1, 2, 6, and 7 skip at lines 780-781, 788, 926, and 960-962. When other cameras still have EEPROMs, those cases run and silently cover fewer cameras. The binary can still exit 0 because the bus layout case and other cases can pass.

The test cannot separate an absent EEPROM from this regression. CameraFeatures has no EEPROM field, and the repository has no CCM presence query. A distinct absence response from the firmware would allow the test to tell the two cases apart. A local change that fails on not-powered would also fail cameras that have no EEPROM, which this file treats as valid.

Compare each backed-up EEPROM with its backup after the shared session closes.

When every write in this case is refused, pending.discard() drops all backups without reading any EEPROM. The no-write expectation then rests only on the refusal error. If a write changes EEPROM bytes and still returns SHARED_BUS_ERROR, this case passes and the changed bytes stay in the EEPROM.

Reads inside the shared session cannot prove that the bytes are unchanged. Both cameras stream there, so those reads are refused. Read each backed-up socket in its own single-camera session, as PendingRestores::restore() already does. Record a failure when the bytes differ from the backup or the read fails. Keep the backups so restore() writes them back before the assertions run. discard() then has no caller and can be removed.

Suggested fix
- // A refused write sends nothing to the EEPROM, so only writes that went through need restoring
+ // Each backed-up EEPROM must still hold its inventory bytes. Read it after the shared session closes, while its camera streams alone

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The matrix schedules both Lightroom camera models independently, while the supplied workflow comment says hil_runner powers off the testbed's other camera. If reservations are not exclusive across the testbed, one matrix leg can power off the camera being tested by the other.

EEPROM tests can fail during streaming or restoration because their camera loses power.

This can occur when: Both matrix legs obtain reservations concurrently on the Lightroom testbed.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

withCcmEeprom accepts an inventory entry based only on its presence. If a successful full EEPROM read returned fewer than WRITE_WINDOW bytes, inventoryWindow would later form a 20-byte range beyond that entry's end.

A write or early-read case can encounter undefined behavior instead of reporting an invalid readout.

This can occur when: The CCM read RPC reports success but supplies a stable response shorter than 20 bytes for a connected camera.

Persist the EEPROM backup to disk before the first write.

roundTrip keeps each backup only in PendingRestores, an in-memory map. If the process is killed or times out after writeCcm and before restoreWindow, the destructor does not run. The payload stays on the EEPROM. The next run reads that payload as the original and backs it up, so the true original is lost. Write each backup to a file before the first write, and restore any leftover backup when the test starts.

Reasoning for the fix

The current code keeps no copy that survives the process. A file-based backup also needs a startup check that restores leftover data. Implementing this touches each write case, so no localized diff is shown.

Review comment at @tests/src/ondevice_tests/camera_eeprom_test.cpp at line 735:
Update roundTrip and the test startup flow so each original EEPROM payload is
persisted to disk before the first write, and any leftover backup is restored
before the test reads or writes EEPROM. Retain the backup until restoration
succeeds, so an interrupted run cannot overwrite the only copy of the original
data.

Gate shared-bus writes on an inventory backup for every socket in the pair.

A write on a shared I2C bus reaches every powered module on that bus. The test's own comment states this. The current loop sends payloads to both sockets, but it registers a restore only for sockets in inventory.eeproms. Filtering the writes to backed-up sockets does not prevent the problem, because the write still reaches a powered socket that the inventory omitted.

If a powered module with an EEPROM is missing from the inventory, and the firmware accepts a write that the probe reads refused, that EEPROM is overwritten. The test has no backup and no restore for it. The restore step cannot revert the change, and CHECK(allRefused) reports the event only after the write completes.

Send the shared-bus write only when every socket in the pair has an inventory EEPROM backup. Skip the write step otherwise, and assert allRefused only when writes were sent.

Suggested fix
-                if(refusedWith(layout, probes[pair.a], pair.bus, sockets) && refusedWith(layout, probes[pair.b], pair.bus, sockets)) {
+ // A write reaches every powered module on the bus, so send one only when every socket has an inventory backup
+                const bool allBacked = std::all_of(sockets.begin(), sockets.end(), [&](const CameraBoardSocket socket) { return inventory.eeproms.count(socket) != 0; });
+                if(allBacked && refusedWith(layout, probes[pair.a], pair.bus, sockets) && refusedWith(layout, probes[pair.b], pair.bus, sockets)) {
-        CHECK(allRefused);
+        if(!writes.empty()) CHECK(allRefused);

This change skips the write probe for a pair that has a socket without an inventory EEPROM. It also skips coverage for a module that truly has no EEPROM. That trade-off keeps the test from altering a module that the inventory did not record.

Require a trusted inventory before the pre-start restore backup.

The pre-start case takes its restore backup from inventoryWindow(socket) but does not call requireTrustedInventory(). The other write cases do. When the inventory flags a socket, restoreWindow can write that socket's untrusted bytes back to its EEPROM.

Suggested fix
-    const auto& inventory = ccmInventory();
+    const auto& inventory = requireTrustedInventory();

Update the pre-start restore-backup path around writeCcm to obtain inventory
through requireTrustedInventory before reading inventoryWindow(socket), ensuring
restoreWindow cannot write back untrusted EEPROM bytes. Preserve the existing
backup and restore flow for trusted inventory.

…CBA EEPROM

A camera may have a module (CCM) EEPROM, a camera board (CBA) EEPROM or
both. The cases for one type keep skipping when no camera has it. The new
case "Every connected camera has a CCM or CBA EEPROM" fails when a
connected camera has neither, so a missing EEPROM no longer only shows up
as skips. CBA presence is read in the bus layout's no-pipeline connection,
where the cameras are idle as the CBA probe needs.

Catch CBA query failures in withCbaEeprom.

withCbaEeprom calls isCBAEepromAvailable without a try. An RPC failure throws from busLayout(), so every requireLayout() case fails, including CCM-only cases that do not use CBA data. Catch the exception per camera and report it, so one failed CBA query does not abort the CCM layout discovery.

The lightroom OAK4 Lite has no factory calibration, so hil's
calibration_test and stereo_pairs sanity checks fail and block the
testbed before camera_eeprom_test runs. The EEPROM tests don't use
calibration, so skip both checks in the EEPROM job.
