Target branch: main

Summary

Fixes #192 and fixes #112 and a couple other minor improvements found while implementing fixes.

Also performed a dependency audit to bring everything up to speed. This will be an r-universe only release.

Test plan

Unit tests all pass and (not checked in) integration testing with xarray was implemented as a cross check.
