Plate Atlas is a free, open-source reference for international vehicle registration codes and license plate examples.
The goal is to help you browse countries, inspect plate details and compare regional formats. You can search by name, code, or continent. Each detail page gives you more info about the plate format and either lists area- or region-based identifiers or shows example images of plates from different periods.
The current dataset in this repository includes 185 countries and the country data was last updated on May 24, 2026.
Corrections and improvements are welcome. If you notice inaccurate plate data, missing examples, or UI issues, open an issue or submit a pull request:
When working on the dataset, rerun
npm run sync-imagesif you add or update remote image references so the local mirrors stay in sync.
Plate Atlas uses data and image references gathered from public reference sites and community archives. Source URLs are preserved in the JSON data files where possible.
Mirrored images under public/images/ are included for reliable loading and offline support. They remain subject to the copyright, license terms, and attribution requirements of their original sources. See Asset and Data Notice for details.
The application code, scripts, and project documentation are licensed under the MIT License. Third-party images and referenced data are covered by their original sources; see Asset and Data Notice.
