Follow-up to #4874, whose scope listed a "spotlight cut-out".

❓ Type of change

  • 📖 Documentation (updates to the documentation or readme)
  • 🐞 Bug fix (a non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • 👌 Enhancement (improving an existing functionality)
  • ✨ New feature (a non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • 🧹 Chore (updates to the build process or auxiliary tools and libraries)
  • ⚠️ Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)

📚 Description

Adds a "Spotlight" example to the useTour docs: a backdrop that dims the page around the current target, with a ring around it. No change to the library.

  • The overlay measures tour.reference with VueUse's useElementBounding. It only passes real elements: a centered step anchors to a virtual element, which ResizeObserver and MutationObserver reject.
  • The backdrop uses a clip-path cutout, which also clips hit testing, so the target stays clickable while the rest of the page is blocked. A step without a target dims the whole page.
  • The cutout follows the target's own corner radius (its radius plus the padding, a square target stays square), so any --ui-radius carries over.
  • The ring moves with transform and uses physical left-0, since getBoundingClientRect is physical in RTL too.
  • The docs list the three setup steps, including keeping the measuring inside the overlay: reading the box in the parent template re-renders the whole parent on every scroll frame (+45% frame time in headless Chromium with CPU x4).

📝 Checklist

  • I have linked an issue or discussion.
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly.

Walkthrough

The tour composable now exposes a readonly rectangle for the active target and refreshes it after DOM updates, scrolling, and resizing. A spotlight component uses the rectangle to create a padded cutout in a viewport overlay. The documentation adds a four-step example and instructions for using the rectangle and spotlight.

Thanks for the PR! Not sure we need rect in the composable though, useElementBounding(() => tour.reference.value) from VueUse does the same thing so the spotlight could just be a docs example. I'd rather not add a component for it for now 😊

@benjamincanac Makes sense, done in 430d554: rect is gone from the composable and the spotlight is now a docs example only. It measures the target with useElementBounding, with one guard: a centered step anchors to a virtual element, which ResizeObserver and MutationObserver reject, so the example only passes real elements.

@benjamincanac benjamincanac changed the title docs(useTour): add a spotlight example docs(use-tour): add spotlight example Oct 16, 2026
Add a reactive `rect` to the useTour return value: the viewport-relative
box of the current target, kept in sync on scroll (capture, so inner
scroll containers are tracked), resize and target resize. It is null when
the tour is closed, the step is centered or the target is not found, and
listeners are only attached while the tour is open.

Document a spotlight example built on it: a clip-path backdrop with a
clickable cutout and a ring outline that follows the target's corner
radius, rendered in its own component so scroll updates do not
re-render the page.
Drop `rect` from the composable: VueUse's `useElementBounding` already
tracks the target on scroll (capture), resize and resize observation.
The example only passes real elements, since a centered step anchors to
a virtual element that `ResizeObserver` and `MutationObserver` reject.

I think this example should be under ## Examples below API for consistency: https://ui-llmyjv9zt-nuxt-js.vercel.app/docs/composables/use-overlay#examples

@benjamincanac Moved under ## Examples below the API in 03e0b15, like useOverlay. I also dropped the Soon badge since the example only relies on useTour (released in v4.9.0) and VueUse.
