Overview

Evaluate jellydator/ttlcache/v3 with a passive fixed-TTL adapter, comparative
benchmarks, regression tests, and documented performance findings. Production
process-tree caching remains on Hashicorp pending a passing latency gate.

Fix single-CPU benchmark sampling by retaining up to 16,384 samples per worker
while keeping the 10,000-sample minimum. Add a real single-CPU subprocess
regression and runner threshold coverage. Prepare component-test dependencies
with up to three download attempts and 5/10-second waits; actual tests run once.

Additional Information

This is an evaluation, not a completed migration or a resolution of #1014.
The original controlled idle experiment failed the strict no-regression gate:
median write p99 was 0.0468 ms for Hashicorp versus 42.0160 ms for the passive
adapter at 50,000 entries. Synchronous DeleteExpired() caused the contention.
The adapter retains that behavior for evaluation and is absent from production
imports. The remaining production caches also stay on Hashicorp.

Local validation:

  • Focused adapter/process-tree race tests and vet passed.

  • All five Python tests, workflow syntax validation, and dependency retry
    success/recovery/exhaustion checks passed.

  • The actual single-CPU regression retained 16,384 samples for 1,048,576 ops.
The paired runner completed 30 pairs with every observation above the sample
minimum; its failed latency gate remains recorded. This sampling smoke run
overlapped other checks and is not controlled acceptance evidence.

  • Standalone, gadget, and container builds passed. Independent upstream and
candidate container builds produced the same image digest.

  • Test_02_AllAlertsFromMaliciousApp passed locally in 310.57 seconds using a
disposable Kind cluster, the existing test chart, and storage v0.0.352.

  • Repository-wide privileged race testing passed 73 packages (27 had no tests).
Host FIM and malware-manager packages failed with races reproduced on the
unmodified upstream 493f1011 snapshot. Those files are unchanged.

  • System benchmark completed after resuming the candidate in a fresh equivalent
cluster following a chart download timeout. The unchanged 10% resource gate
failed: average CPU +38.0%, CPU p95 +32.7%; mean memory -0.11%, peak memory
+0.33%. Independently built images have identical digests, so this cannot
attribute the CPU difference to this PR or establish a passing comparison.
    Supplemental current OTEL event rate was 1635.01 vs 1633.56 events/s (-0.09%);
legacy queries returned no series. No rule-throughput or heap-plateau
acceptance is claimed. The full cache matrix remains unrun.

See benchmark/CACHE_MIGRATION.md for methodology, semantics, and proof limits.

How to Test

GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.27.0 go test -mod=readonly -race -count=1 ./internal/ttlcache ./pkg/processtree/...
GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.27.0 go vet -mod=readonly ./internal/ttlcache ./pkg/processtree/...
python3 -m unittest discover -s benchmark -p cache_migration_test.py

Reproduce the single-CPU paired evaluation using a fresh output directory:

python3 benchmark/cache-migration.py --scenario parallel --capacity 1000 \
--cpus 1 --pattern hits --payload int --implementations hashicorp adapter \
  --output /absolute/path/to/fresh-output

A failed/inconclusive latency gate exits nonzero and continues to block
production migration; insufficient samples are never accepted.

Affected package tests pass. The final checkbox remains unchecked because the
repository-wide race suite reproduces two existing upstream failures.

Latest review correction

Operation and key selection now use separate random draws from a deterministic
per-worker PCG generator. A regression at capacities 1,000/10,000/50,000
expires the initial population and verifies writes renew keys subsequently
found by reads. It fails with zero renewed/read keys under the old selector.
Earlier parallel results do not establish the intended workload and require
rerunning; the independent failed idle experiment remains unchanged.

Focused Go race tests and vet, the single-CPU sampling regression, and all five
Python tests pass. The corrected one-CPU expiration runner completed ten paired
Hashicorp/adapter comparisons with 16,384 samples per observation. Its unchanged
0% gate failed (median p95 +113.3%, p99 +403.2%). This was a smoke run overlapping
local checks, not controlled performance acceptance. Full matrix and heap plateau
acceptance remain outstanding; production continues using Hashicorp.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a TTL cache adapter and cache benchmarks, plus a runner that compares latency and records diagnostic experiments. The documented first-write gate failed, and production caches remain on Hashicorp. Additional changes test process-tree cache lookup and add dependency-download retries to component CI.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to da2aa

Production caching behavior is unchanged because the new TTL adapter is used only for benchmarks and tests. The change is low risk to merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7b876

The replacement cache is used by normal event processing, where synchronous expiration cleanup can delay delivery to detection handlers. Recorded experiments show substantial contention, although they used a larger cache than production. Container identity, cache limits and caller interfaces remain unchanged; no exploit or privilege increase was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Expired-batch reclamation now runs synchronously before process-tree cache insertion. Because event enrichment occurs before serial batch dispatch, cleanup can delay detection processing for other events handled by the same watcher. The recorded contention establishes an adapter-level regression, but its magnitude at the production 10,000-entry limit and deliberate attacker saturation are unverified. The benchmark gate does not prevent normal startup from using the replacement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The immediate availability scope is the shared process-tree cache and event-processing loop of a node-agent instance. Entries for different containers share one manager cache, so cleanup delay need not remain isolated to the container whose event triggers it. Cluster-wide propagation or cross-container data disclosure was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Workload events reach process-tree lookup and insertion before worker dispatch, providing a path by which expired-batch cleanup can delay security processing. Recorded synthetic contention supports this availability concern, not a demonstrated detection bypass or exploit. Whether a workload actor can deliberately fill the deployed cache and reproduce consequential delay remains unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The benchmark runner is a local command-line tool. It builds a fixed repository test package and invokes the resulting binary with argument arrays rather than shell interpolation. Its unit tests import the adjacent script; these entrypoints do not themselves expose a network service.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The migrated caller retains a finite 10,000-entry limit and one-minute TTL, bounding stored entry count despite passive retention. The adapter starts no cleanup goroutine and registers no asynchronous callback, reducing lifecycle obligations while transferring reclamation cost to foreground operations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep the passive implementation opt-in for evaluation, or retain the previous production default, until expiration-heavy testing at the deployed capacity establishes acceptable event-processing latency and failure containment.

Request changes on 7b876408d176b572824132334bffe8fc54660f84, targeting main at 83e2cec9f74303483f1fe3f32c8d36a30ee7fcab.

The evaluation has a concrete benefit: #1014 identifies the uncloseable Hashicorp expiration goroutine, and the target branch still constructs that cache. Upstream v2.0.7 source supports the lifecycle concern. Passive construction avoids that goroutine and preserves fixed TTL and LRU reads. This is useful evaluation work, but the production substitution is not ready.

  • High, existing: The unresolved production purge finding remains valid. The normal process-tree constructor selects the adapter unconditionally; misses and forced refreshes call its synchronous full-batch DeleteExpired, which holds the exclusive cache lock. The documented failed gate measures this at 50,000 entries, not the deployed 10,000-entry capacity; I do not extrapolate an exact production delay. Retain Hashicorp in the production manager while preserving the evaluation, or establish a design that passes the required latency gate. No duplicate inline comment added.
  • Medium, new: The documented single-CPU parallel benchmark cannot meet the runner's sample minimum; see the new inline comment. This prevents completing the prescribed evaluation matrix.

History: searched repository PRs across open/closed/merged states and issues with ttlcache, expirable, LRU, containerProcessTreeCache, process-tree cache, passive cache, and goroutine/leak terms (up to 100 results per query; indexed text, not exhaustive historical diffs). No duplicate or superseding migration was found. Merged #936 optimized this manager's keys/allocations, and merged #876 fixed creator shutdown/PID reuse; neither removes the cache sweeper. Their review decisions concern separate mechanisms. Broad-search closed #923 was abandoned over fork/storage divergence, not rejection of this cache approach. No applicable prior rejection found within these search limits.

Validation: isolated credential-free containers; GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.27.0 go test -mod=readonly -race -count=1 ./internal/ttlcache ./pkg/processtree/... passed, including leak tests. Python unittest discover -s benchmark -p cache_migration_test.py passed all four tests. A real adapter BenchmarkCacheParallel run with latency sampling, hits, integer payloads, -cpu=1 -benchtime=2s -count=1 returned exactly 8192 samples, below the runner's 10000 minimum. go vet -mod=readonly ./internal/ttlcache passed; the separate process-tree vet attempt was interrupted by test-container teardown and has no result. The reviewed CI has successful build, benchmark, CodeQL and other component checks; the failed component job failed dependency setup with Go proxy HTTP/2 stream errors before test execution, not a demonstrated PR defect. CI's system benchmark does not establish the adapter's required tail-latency matrix or heap plateau. Full matrix, fresh idle-gate reproduction, privileged repository-wide checks and a before/after lifecycle test were not run here. Intentional Has/Len/nonpositive-TTL differences are documented and those methods are not used by the migrated caller. No additional confirmed security, API, concurrency or scope blocker found. Both independent review lanes returned request-changes / architectural BLOCK.

Rechecked head ddc51e4 against main at 493f101. Both previous blockers are fixed: production retains Hashicorp, and single-CPU retention is now 16,384 with a subprocess regression and runner threshold coverage. Both prior threads are resolved. The failed idle gate is appropriately retained as evaluation evidence, not migration acceptance; #1014 remains open.

One medium blocker remains in the reusable evaluation harness: operation selection and key selection are correlated, making expiration reads target keys that writes never renew. See inline finding. Independent correctness and architecture reviews agree (REQUEST CHANGES / BLOCK). No new production-path blocker found.

Related-history searches across repository PRs and issues (ttlcache, expirable, process-tree cache, containerProcessTreeCache, cache leak and sampling; up to 100 indexed results/query) found no superseding evaluation. Merged #936 and #876 cover allocation/creator-lifecycle work, not this cache evaluation. Closed #923 was abandoned after divergence/storage mismatch, not a rejection of this approach. These indexed searches are bounded, not exhaustive.

Validation: all five Python runner tests passed in a network-disabled container. go test -p 2 -mod=readonly -race -count=1 ./internal/ttlcache ./pkg/processtree/... and go vet -p 2 -mod=readonly ./internal/ttlcache ./pkg/processtree/... passed, including the actual single-CPU subprocess regression, in a credential-free container with Go 1.27.1. Arithmetic enumeration confirms disjoint read/write key sets at all three documented capacities. Full latency matrix, heap plateau and privileged/system tests were not rerun here. The current CI checks are green; the documented failed system resource comparison and incomplete cache matrix/heap plateau do not establish migration acceptance. No source changes or merge performed.
